Vis
The Mysterious Island
Further out to sea than any other inhabited Croatian island, Vis is a place of secrets. Once a forbidden military outpost, today it is the chosen retreat for those seeking authenticity and solitude. With its dramatic cliffs, hidden submarine pens, and the filming locations of 'Mamma Mia 2', Vis is intriguing, beautiful, and utterly unique.
Frozen in Time
For 40 years, Vis was a closed Yugoslav military base, completely cut off from foreign visitors until 1989. This isolation was a blessing in disguise, preserving the island from mass tourism and modern development.
Today, Vis feels like the Mediterranean of 50 years ago. Its architecture is untouched, its nature is wild, and its atmosphere is authentically laid-back. You can even take a guided tour of the secret submarine tunnels and underground bunkers that honeycomb the island's interior.
Natural Wonders
Just a short cruise from Komiža (the island's second town) lies the islet of Biševo, home to the world-famous Blue Cave (Modra Špilja). At around noon, sunlight reflects through an underwater opening, bathing the cave interior in an ethereal, glowing neon blue light.
On the southern coast of Vis, you will find Stiniva Cove, voted one of the best beaches in Europe. Hidden behind towering cliffs that almost close to form a stone amphitheater, it is accessible only by boat or a steep goat path, making it a perfect stop for your yacht.
Gastronomy
Vis is a foodie's paradise. The island is famous for 'Peka'—octopus or lamb slow-cooked under a bell-like dome covered in embers. It requires ordering hours in advance, but the tender, smoky result is worth the wait.
In the Kut district of Vis Town, you will find some of the best seafood restaurants in the Adriatic. Be sure to try 'Viška Pogača', a savory focaccia filled with sardines, onions, and tomatoes, paired with the local Vugava white wine.
