Mljet NP

The Green Island

If you are seeking silence, scent, and serenity, Mljet is your destination. Known as the 'Green Island', it is a place where the noise of the modern world simply disappears, replaced by the sound of crickets and the wind in the pine trees. It is the ultimate nature retreat for the soul.

The Greenest Island

Mljet is often cited as the most beautiful island in the Adriatic. Over 70% of its surface is covered by dense Aleppo pine forests, giving it an intense emerald color that contrasts sharply with the sapphire blue sea.

The western third of the island is a designated National Park, protecting two unique saltwater lakes: Veliko Jezero (Great Lake) and Malo Jezero (Small Lake). These lakes are connected to the sea by a narrow channel, making their waters warmer and calmer—perfect for swimming year-round.

Myth & Legend

Legend has it that this is the island of Ogygia, where the nymph Calypso held Odysseus captive for seven years. It is easy to see why he might have stayed; the island's tranquility is seductive.

In the middle of the Great Lake lies the tiny Islet of St. Mary, home to a 12th-century Benedictine monastery. Taking a small boat to this islet for a quiet walk among the ancient stones is like stepping back into a simpler, more spiritual time.

Active Tranquility

Mljet is best explored at a slow pace. We recommend docking in Pomena or Polače[cite: 93], the two main gateways to the park. From there, you can rent bicycles to ride the flat, shaded paths that encircle the lakes.

For the adventurous, a tender ride to the southern coast reveals 'Odysseus Cave', a stunning geomorphological phenomenon where the sunlight turns the sea electric blue. It is a magical spot for a cliff jump or a deep-water swim.
